What led you to a career in early childhood education?
My mum is my biggest inspiration. She was a preschool educator, and in fact, she was also my preschool teacher. Witnessing her passion and love for children naturally rubbed off me. Inspired by her, I began volunteering in my church, caring for children from diverse backgrounds, which further fuelled my desire to work in this field.
Building on my practical experiences, I pursued a diploma in Early Childhood Development and Education at Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where I graduated with merit. During my studies, I chose the early intervention track, recognising the importance of supporting children with special needs. I also undertook business studies to strengthen my communication and management abilities. Over the course of three years, my studies equipped me with a comprehensive set of skills and knowledge that have shaped me into the educator I am today. I was honoured to receive the prestigious ECDA Commendation Award in 2022, which humbled me and further motivated me to continue making a positive impact on the lives of young children.
What do you think are the key challenges and rewards of working with preschoolers, and how do you navigate these aspects in your role?
One significant challenge involves adapting to their ever-changing emotions and behaviours. Preschoolers exhibit a range of emotions, with some children being more proficient at expressing themselves than others. As an educator, it is crucial to assist them in regulating their emotions by providing a comfortable environment where they can freely express their thoughts, feelings and ideas. Ensuring equal opportunities for every child in the class poses another challenge. I constantly remind myself to support each child, regardless of their capabilities. Every child deserves a teacher they feel at ease with and can confide in.
Despite these challenges, there are numerous rewards that come with working with preschoolers. One of the most significant is witnessing their growth and progress on a daily basis. I find it incredibly fulfilling to see them develop and form their characters.
What is a typical workday like for you?
I start my day with a good breakfast before making my way to school. I like to arrive 10 to 15 minutes earlier to get myself organised and ready for the day ahead. One of the aspects I particularly enjoy about my work is taking the children outdoors, as it allows them to learn in a more dynamic environment, beyond the confines of the classroom. Once everyone is warmed up and ready, I commence my lessons. I find great satisfaction in establishing meaningful connections with the children through everyday conversations, which provide insights into their personalities, life experiences and interests. During the children’s nap times, I take the opportunity to recharge while simultaneously attending to paperwork and preparing for upcoming lessons. This brief respite allows me to strike a balance between rest and productivity.
I aim to become their trusted teacher and friend. I want to be someone they can always rely on, whether they need someone to talk to, share their joys and sorrows, or simply laugh together. I wish to leave a profound and cherished memory in the hearts of every child I interact with.
What do you hope to achieve as a preschool educator in the long term, and how do you envision making a lasting impact on the lives of young children?
As a preschool educator, my long-term goal is to create a meaningful and lasting impact on the lives of young children. I envision fostering positive experiences that will stay with them as they continue to grow. By building strong, loving and open relationships with each child, I aim to become their trusted teacher and friend. I want to be someone they can always rely on, whether they need someone to talk to, share their joys and sorrows, or simply laugh together. I wish to leave a profound and cherished memory in the hearts of every child I interact with.
