Manager, Enrolment
2 years with Star Learners
What attracted you to the field of early childhood education and how did you end up in your current role as Enrolment Manager for Star Learners?
My kindergarten teacher left a lasting impression on me. Just like she did for me, I aspired to make a positive impact on children’s lives, so I first joined the field of early childhood education as an educator. I enjoyed the sense of fulfilment developing numerous little minds, but as I grew in the industry, I discovered that I also have a knack for communicating and building positive rapport with parents. So when this opportunity of Enrolment Manager presented itself, I was excited! I saw it as a chance to hone my skills, to help enhance the preschool enrolment experience for more parents and their children.
What does your role as an Enrolment Manager entail?
I work with a team of Enrolment Advisors to provide support to Principals in reaching out to potential parents. Our goal is to provide them with a deeper understanding of Star Learners and how our offerings differ from other preschools. We also collaborate with other HQ departments such as our Brand Experience & Communications and Preschools teams to brainstorm and implement strategies aimed at increasing enrolment.
Drawing on my own experience as a parent of young children, I recognise the importance of understanding the needs of new parents during the preschool selection journey. Be it conducting virtual tours or addressing their enquiries, I make it a point to empathise with these parents and offer solutions and advice to allay their concerns and anxieties.
To effectively share with new parents on the quality of care and education we offer, I must first be wholeheartedly convinced. With that conviction, I can leverage Star Learners’ reputation in the sector and speak of our child care services with confidence. In my interactions with parents, I’ve observed that they value my enthusiasm and unwavering belief in our programmes, allowing me to play a pivotal role in their decision to choose our preschool.
Have you encountered any major challenges or obstacles along your Star Learners journey?
One of the challenges I face is the number-crunching aspect of my job. It’s a real challenge for me as I find myself constantly having to dive into numerical data and trying to figure out what it all means. Before I joined the company, I didn’t really have much experience or formal training in analytics. In order to better equip myself with data analytical skills, I would read up and watch online tutorials on data analysis and mastering Microsoft Excel. I’ve also been lucky to have my Reporting Officer, Sharon Lin, who is an incredible mentor to me. She has patiently helped me learn the ropes and I’m really grateful for her support and encouragement.
(…) my role isn’t just about matching and placing children in our centres; it’s also about helping working parents navigate the childminding challenges that they face.
Could you share a memorable success story or experience that highlights the impact of your role on children and their families during the preschool enrolment process?
I once had a pretty intense phone call with a frustrated parent because there was no vacancy at the centre that she wanted to enrol her child in. She vented for nearly two hours and eventually opened up about some personal issues during our conversation. I did my best to assist and even managed to secure a spot for her child at another centre. She was really grateful and apologised for her earlier outburst.
While it wasn’t the most pleasant experience, it was definitely memorable. It pushed me out of my comfort zone and taught me to be a more empathetic listener. I realised that my role isn’t just about matching and placing children in our centres; it’s also about helping working parents navigate the childminding challenges that they face.
What are your well wishes for Star Learners as we celebrate 20 Inspiring Years?
I hope for Star Learners to become the go-to preschool of choice for both parents and employees. I envision parents having complete confidence in selecting any Star Learners centre for their child’s preschool education. Likewise, I wish for Star Learners to continue to be a place where all our staff find fulfilment and reap the rewards of their hard work.
